The St. Tammany DPEC makes the following endorsements for the upcoming elections:

DPEC member Angelique LaCour is hosting phone banking to make courtesy calls to Democrats in precincts where the polling location has changed. Calling will take place 9/2 through 9/6, 3pm-8:30pm, at Jim Harlan's campaign office, 428 Boston Street. You can reach Angelique at 985-635-9436 or send an e-mail here for further information.

THE REALITY: McCain said in 2006 that he would repeal Roe v. Wade. His campaign website calls for overturning Roe, returning the issue of abortion to the states, and then building "the necessary consensus to end abortion at the state level." "I will be a pro-life president and this presidency will have pro-life policies," he told Pastor Rick Warren this month. Planned Parenthood and NARAL have both given him a zero rating on abortion issues.

This is hardly the nastiest campaign in recent memory. But it's not shaping up as the "civil" contest that both candidates promised either. Instead, we're seeing the emergence of a "smear gap". John McCain making stuff up about Barack Obama, and Obama trying to figure out how hard he should hit back.
